A fire that officials believed started at a residence at 2803 Highway 260 in Overgaard destroyed three homes and a garage on Sunday, March 22. Two other homes sustained minor damage.
According to public information officer Greg Adamson of the Heber/Overgaard Fire Department, the fire began from unknown causes at approximately 2:50 p.m. and closed down a section of Highway 260 about 40 miles northwest of Show Low until around 6:30 p.m. due to strong winds in the vicinity.
There were no injuries or loss of life, although several pets are reportedly missing.
Five agencies responded with 42 fire fighters providing assistance to battle the blaze, which was primarily out by 7:30 p.m. Sunday, with some crews remaining to monitor for hot spots. In total, the fire covered approximately 15 to 20 acres.
