Walmart Traffic Light And Intersection Work Approved By Taylor City CouncilMarch 27th, 2009
By Naomi Hatch The bid was awarded for construction of the Silver Creek Plaza intersection at a special meeting of the Taylor Town Council held on Tuesday, March 24. Town Engineer Stu Spaulding told the council there were five bids ranging from $322,221 by Combs Construction to $454,595.75 from Engineer’s Estimate. Town Manager Eric Duthie reported that the advertising process was followed with a pre-bid meeting held on March 12 and bids were opened on March 20, as required by state statute. Spaulding said that the project scope includes the widening of Main Street (SR 77) and furnishing of all material necessary to partially construct an intersection lighting system and for the construction of a traffic signal in the future at the junction with the middle driveway of the Silver Creek Shopping Plaza and the future driveway for development east of Main Street. Spaulding explained that the project will be done in two phases with the first phase including all work on the intersection, including a portion of the sidewalks as well as placing of the traffic light poles. Phase II will be completed when Walmart completes construction, and will consist of the electric work on the streetlights and placing the traffic lights. Sealed bids were received from Combs Construction of Glendale, Surfacing Contracting of Glendale, Show Low Construction of Show Low, Intermountain West Civil Contractors of Payson and Hatch Construction and Paving of Taylor. In response to a question posed by Mayor John Cole, Spaulding said the price was much less than estimates due to the economy. Combs said that they were able to piggyback this project with another project they had been awarded. Spaulding said that awarding the bid will keep the town on schedule with the grant, noting that because of the grant the project will be done in two phases. Kirk Brimhall was present and said that Combs Construction has done a lot of Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) work, noting they are the company that milled out and replaced the existing traffic signal overnight.
