Strong Winds Keep Winslow Schools’ Out-Of-Town Buses Off The Road

April 22nd, 2009

During the April 15 meeting of the Winslow School District Governing Board, the board discussed the effects of the area’s recent winds on school transportation.
“Today was the second time in about two weeks that a decision was made to delay out-of-town buses for safety’s sake,” stated Superintendent Robert Mansell.
The winds, with gusts of up to 59 miles per hour reported, made visibility extremely limited and closed Interstate 40 for most of the day.
According to Mansell, conditions improved by early evening and buses were able to transport students at 5:30 p.m.
Another report by Assistant Superintendent Doug Watson noted that an April 5 break-in at the old high school building that is now used for storage was caught on the school’s surveillance cameras.
“Some current and former high school students were quickly identified,” stated Watson. “Most of the damage was to the windows and the cameras, and the matter has be turned over to the police.”
     In other business, the board:
    * Approved expense and payroll vouchers totaling $659,350.30.
    * Approved the resignation of Randall Begay, Winslow Junior High School special education classroom aide.
    * Approved the retirement and participation in the District Retirement Program of William Fish, Winslow High School career counselor.
    * Approved donations of five softball bats valued at $1,401.90 from Zachry employees at the Cholla Power Plant site for the WHS softball team; and $164.39 from School Mall to Jefferson Elementary School.
    * Approved the guidelines for retirees returning to work, allowing the rehire of school district retirees in order to save money and keep qualified teachers.
    * Approved position de scri ption updates for the intervention specialist teacher and the career counselor position.
