Two New Committees Focus On Proposed Consolidation Of Towns

April 29th, 2009

By Naomi Hatch
Two new committees regarding the proposed consolidation of the towns of Snowflake and Taylor have been organized.
The Committee of the Communities is a combination of committees both pro and con regarding the proposed consolidation. Its objective is to educate and encourage people to get involved in the consolidation issue. Members will strive to preserve, protect and defend the unity of each community, both individually and collectively, and show that there can be opposition without conflict.
Members of the committee plan to work to provide accurate information from the two town councils, town managers and town attorneys, and from the people.  They will unite to encourage the citizens of both communities to get involved, be educated and have the desire to vote.
The hopes of this committee is to emerge from the election a stronger, more united community, no matter which way the vote goes.
The Committee of the Communities will meet in hopes its can get people interested enough to research the issues. For more information, contact Jacob Tenney at 536-4465 or go online to www.whyconsolidate.info.
The Yes for Consolidation Committee plans to educate and unite the communities in heritage, efficiency, budget savings and regional development.  The goals are to reach and encourage every eligible voter to get involved in the election process, and to support and encourage harmony and fairness throughout the community, including town government, the Navajo County Board of Supervisors and the people.
Committee members feel that consolidation would reduce retail sales tax competition between Snowflake and Taylor, and take competition to regional retail opportunities in order to reduce retail leakage. They also feel a consolidated community would be more likely to attract federal and state economic development grants, bring fair and adequate political representation to each community, keep existing community festivals and events, and keep love, trust and harmony among the communities.
