Tribune-News Recognized For 100 Years Of Service To Area

    The Tribune-News was honored for 100 years of service by a proclamation of the Navajo County Board of Supervisors Tuesday.
    The proclamation acknowledged that, with the exception of a few years, The Tribune-News has been the newspaper of record for the county and that residents have depended on the paper for timely, accurate and insightful reporting since 1909.
    The proclamation, which was read by County Manager James Jayne, stated, “The Holbrook Tribune has remained one of Navajo County’s most read newspapers in a market dominated by large publications, the Holbrook Tribune News has demonstrated remarkable resiliency and commercial success.”
    Supervisor J.R. DeSpain added that The Tribune-News is “a part of our community and our heritage.”
    In other business May 12, the board:
    * Approved cell phone stipend changes for Dr. Wade Kartchner and Don Walker, public information training officer, of the county health district to $100 per month each. Supervisor Jonathan Nez will no longer receive a stipend.
    * Approved an agreement between the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration for a cannabis eradication grant in the amount of $1,000 for the grant year of 2009.
    * Authorized a memorandum of understanding regarding Recovery Act: Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Formula Program: Local Solicitation for grant funds totaling $30,919 for the sheriff’s office, $55,194 for the Holbrook Police Department, $59,988 for the Show Low Police Department, $35,178 for the Snowflake-Taylor Police Department and $44,911 for the Winslow Police Department that will be used to fund a criminal analyst investigator for each of those areas.
    * Approved naming an existing road in the Shumway area Open Sky Loop.
    * Approved an amendment to the contract between the Navajo County Health Department and the State Immunization Program for a price sheet rate increase for the contract year through Dec. 31.
    * Approved a request by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for a special use permit for the Heber Youth Camp to provide recreation and camping activities for a maximum of 476 youth and invited guests.
    * Approved the final plat for the Aspen Ridge Medical Center Condominium Subdivision, which will be located in Lakeside.
    * Approved an assessment in the amount of $219,062 for the North Whistle Stop Improvement District in the Pinetop/Lakeside area.
    * Approved the purchase of five motor grader tires for an amount not to exceed $2,200 for the Blue Gap/Tachee Chapter, to be paid from District I Special Road Funds.
    * Approved funding in an amount not to exceed $2,500 from District III Local Transportation Assistance Fund II for vehicle operating expenses for the Bread of Life Mission in Holbrook.
    * Approved eight additional personal hours for county employees to be added in fiscal year 2009-10.
    * Approved a rate increase for indigent burial up to $650 for direct burial, up to $650 for cremation, and up to $500 for lot opening and closing fees. Transportation to the cemetery increased to $1.35 per mile.
    * Approved the Navajo County Energy Management and Conservation Strategy, which will allow the county to apply for an Energy Efficiency Block Grant.
    * Approved a change order to include $28,018.26 to Urban Edge Commercial, Inc. for civil engineering and geotech costs for the new Show Low Governmental Complex, with $14,009.13 to be paid from bond proceeds and $14,009.13 by the county health district, increasing the health district’s project costs to $306,640.13.
    * Approved hiring ABC Inc. for professional facilitation services to conduct strategic transportation planning sessions in the district beginning May 15 at a cost not to exceed $6,571.50 from District I Special Road Funds.
    * Authorized the disposition of the district bond funds and the dissolution of the following districts, with the money noted to be transferred to the Navajo County General Fund: Buck Springs Road, $7,372.78; Chaparral Drive, $12,698.19; Moon Creek Circle, $238.15; Mule Deer Way, $25,395.01; Pine Meadows Country Club, $6,593.12; Wild Horse Road No. 1, $11,749.45; Forest Trails, $1,830.59; Misty Mountain, $9,387.03; Mountain Homes Unit II, $4,738.92; Palamino Drive, $$6,532.37; Sweeping Vista/Charro Way, $5,130.60; Timberlake Pines, $1,834.30; and Heber Domestic Water, $2,689.67.
