Trapper Days Open SaturdayMay 20th, 2009
By Naomi Hatch Taylor’s summer traditions begin with Trapper Days on Saturday, May 23. Brad Click heads up the committee that came to the Taylor Town Council in 2003 requesting permission to have a celebration to honor those who helped to make Taylor what it is today. “Too many times the pioneers, stalwart citizens are forgotten,” said Click, “and one of the most notable places in town in Trapper’s Cafe.” He noted that Trapper’s has been written about in magazines and is well known throughout the country. Click wanted to honor Kirk (Trapper) Hatch, and he has put a lot of effort into doing just that. An important part of the day is honoring the veterans in a program that begins at 9 a.m. at the gazebo at the corner of Main and Center streets. This year they have added the names of Brigett de la Cruz, Alex Houser, Jake Houser, Richard Ables, Douglas Neff and Jared Neff to the veterans monument in the courtyard of the Taylor Museum. The flag at the Taylor Museum will be retired and presented to a veteran in the community during the memorial program slated at 9 o’clock Saturday morning. This year’s speaker will be veteran Van Shumway. The names of those from Taylor who served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm and the Global War on Terror will be read. Taylor had five veterans who gave their lives while serving, including: Royal Lewis, World War I; Fen Wakefield, World War II; Hunt Standifird, World War II; Gyle Standifird, World War II; and Dorothy Fails, Operation Desert Storm. Trail ride participants can sign up at 6:30 a.m. at the holding pen located four miles west of Highway 77 on the Pinedale Road. A biscuit and gravy breakfast will be served to riders. The ride will begin at 7:30 a.m. and will last approximately three hours. For more information, contact Trail Boss Judy Vieira at 536-7497. The American Legion Breakfast will be served from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Rodeo Park. The cost will be $3 per person. Also at 9 a.m. is the registration for the Pit Bull Weight Pull and Conformation Show. Weight pulling for pit bulls begins at 10:30 a.m. The All American Dog Registry Four Corners Conformation Show will begin at 1 p.m. Vintage tractors will be on display starting at 10 a.m., and will go on parade through Rodeo Park at 12 noon. Dave Woods famous barbecue begins serving at 11 a.m. Registration for the Mutt Show will be held at 12:30 p.m. on the softball field at Rodeo Park, and the show will follow. Titles include Biggest Dog, Littlest Dog, Blackest Dog, Whitest Dog, Ugliest Dog, Prettiest Dog and Best Trick. Barrel racing will be presented by the Northern Arizona Barrel Racing Association at 2 p.m. in the Rodeo Park Arena. All activities at Rodeo Park will conclude at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., the doors will open for the Grand Ole Opry at the LDS Stake Center on West Willow in Taylor. Admission is $5 per person. The first act will go on stage at 6:30 p.m. All historic sites will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. On Monday, May 25, a Hayride Jamboree sponsored by the Taylor-Shumway Heritage Foundation will begin at the Margaret McCleve Log Cabin with a hayride and tour of historic Taylor. It will be narrated by a member of the Taylor/Shumway Heritage Foundation, with the last stop at the cabin for chili beans, cornbread and homemade jam, as well as entertainment.
