Star Party Was A Great SuccessJune 3rd, 2009
By Naomi Hatch The recent Star Party sponsored by the Snowflake-Taylor Tourism Committee was a great success despite inclement weather, Treavor Allen, administrative assistant to the Tourism Committee, advised the Snowflake Town Council May 26. The event was held at Sutter Ranch just off Hay Hollow Road. Allen said that Thursday night it rained hard, but on Friday the sky cleared up and they were able to see beautiful stars, clusters of galaxies, Saturn and its moon and rings, as well as satellites. On Saturday approximately 20 people showed up and huddled together for 15 to 20 minutes, but most left due to the rain. Allen said that there was a good number of people in attendance Friday, ranging from 5 and 6 year olds to senior couples in their 70s and 80s who came from all over, not just our area. There was a variety of stargazers from those who were more experience to those just learning who were there to find out more information. Bill Wood, who is chairman of the Astronomy Committee and owner of EWS Hobby Shop in Snowflake, was on hand to answer questions and give demonstrations of telescopes. “The consensus from those in attendance was that it was a great success,” said Allen. The next Star Party will be held in July, and another is scheduled in September.
