September 9th, 2009

The eighth annual 9/11 Day of Remembrance will be held at 7 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, at the Taylor Fire Station.
Fred Carnahan who has joined his mother in organizing the event since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, said, “We can’t be forgetting this and that’s why we’re doing it, just to remind people how vulnerable we are, no matter whatever protections we take, we’re still vulnerable.”
Fred and Ruth Carnahan held their first few programs in front of their home in Snowflake, but so many people attended they moved it to the fire stations, alternating between Taylor and Snowflake.
This year’s program will be similar to programs in the past. The American Legion Honor Guard from Heber/Overgaard will provide the 21-gun salute to honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks and Dr. Daniel Neel will play his bagpipes.
There will have bouquets of flowers for the empty boot representing the emergency medical services (EMS) and firefighters who lost their lives, and the empty holster representing the policemen who lost their lives. There will be a siren salute by fire trucks and police vehicles from throughout the White Mountains at the time the first plane hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
Speakers will be State Senator Sylvia Allen and State Representative Jack Brown. Snowflake Town Manager Paul Watson will emcee the program.
Donuts and drinks will be served following the program.
Participants are asked to arrive early and be in their seats by 7 a.m. when the program begins.
