Winslow School Board Postpones Its Decision On Legislative ItemsOctober 21st, 2009
By Sam Conner The Winslow School Board met Oct. 7 with only three of its five members present. One item was tabled so that all members could participate in its discussion. All other items were approved unanimously by those present. Present at the meeting were Loren Sadler, Dodie Montoya and Roberta Hadnot. Marian Scheid and Beth Carlson were absent from the proceedings. The item tabled was the scheduled choosing of 10 legislative items to be pursued by the Arizona School Boards Association. Roberta Hadnot moved that the item be tabled until the next meeting so that the absent members could participate in the discussion and decision. The motion carried unanimously. Those hired as district substitute teachers were Sheila Long and Roger Peacock. Patricia Gomez was hired as a special education classroom aide at Bonnie Brennan Elementary School, and Janice Childers was hired as a part-time special education aide at Winslow Junior High School. Three gifts were accepted by the board. Miniature footballs valued at $150 donated to Winslow High School for Homecoming by Valarie Stearns. An anonymous gift of $150 was made to the WHS Hoops Club, and a $45.06 gift was made by Qwest One Percent Back to the district schools for technology needs. Out of state travel to Fort Bliss, Texas, was approved for one teacher, who is an employee of the Northern Arizona Vocational Institute of Technology, and NAVIT will pay for the travel so there will be no cost to the district. Athletic Director Don Petranovich announced that there will be a seminar at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, for WHS athletes and their parents at the Winslow Performing Arts Center. The seminar will be presented by Tim Kempton, who played at Notre Dame and was a Phoenix Suns broadcaster. The seminar will cover college recruiting, scholarships and related topics. The seminar is valued at $500, but will be free to the public. An Advanced Chemistry textbook which had been on display for the required 60 days was adopted. WHS Counselor Renell Heister gave a presentation on education and career action plans. She noted that the plans are mandated by the Arizona State Board of Education for grades nine through 12. She explained the program in detail and answered questions from the board. Business Manager Shirley Lomeli gave the financial report and said that there was a carry forward amount of $274,512. She said that the district has stayed well within the budgeted amounts for the year. She further noted that the budget figures were not usually due until the end of October, but that the state is still trying to determine whether it will pay the $840,000 that should have been paid in May. During his comments, Superintendent Doug Watson said that the district has an override election scheduled for Nov. 3. The district is not asking for new taxes, but to maintain current funding. Should the override fail, the district will face a reduction in next year’s budget of approximately a third of a million dollars.
