Navajo County To Conduct Taylor’s March 9 Election

October 21st, 2009

By Naomi Hatch
The Taylor Town Council entered into an intergovernmental agreement last week with Navajo County to conduct the town’s March 9 election.
Town Clerk Kelly Jones explained that the town has previously conducted its own election, so it does not have an agreement with the county. The Navajo County Board of Supervisors approved the agreement Oct. 13.
Jones explained, “If approved, this allows the county to conduct the election, utilize their voting system, their certified workers and all the services they have to offer.”  She said that Taylor is one of the few towns that does not utilize the county for elections.
In response to a question from Vice Mayor Debbie Tuckfield, Jones explained that the town will pay the county to put together a publicity pamphlet, and for postage, advertising and poll workers, plus some other fees, including the cost for the county recorder’s office to verify ballots, questions on ballots and fees for early voting.
A motion to approve the agreement passed unanimously.
A public hearing was also held at the Oct. 14 council meeting to allow public comment from individuals wishing to express their views concerning the renewal of the Navajo County Enterprise Zone, which includes the Town of Taylor.  No comments were received.
Ratification of resolution R2009-15 supporting a Navajo County Enterprise Zone was unanimously approved as part of the consent agenda.
Due to conflicts for the holidays, the council unanimously approved moving the November meeting to Wednesday, Nov. 18, and holding only one council meeting in November. The December meeting will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 9. If it becomes necessary, the council agreed to hold a special meeting.
