Bessent Is Arrested At Mexican Border

January 29th, 2010

A man that the Holbrook Police Department has been searching for was arrested at the Antelope Wells port of entry on Monday, Jan. 25.
The man, identified as 46-year-old Calvin Craig Bessent Jr. of Holbrook, was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison and lifetime probation after pleading guilty to state charges of furnishing harmful items to a minor and attempted sexual exploitation of a minor (child pornography) in May 2007, following an investigation by the Holbrook Police Department and the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office.
Bessent was wanted for failure to register a change of address as a sex offender and violation of probation. He is also wanted for questioning regarding a residential burglary he is believed to have committed in Holbrook.
The apprehension was made at approximately 12:45 p.m. Monday when a shuttle van arrived at the port from Mexico. Customs and Border Protection officers at the crossing were performing inspections when they encountered a man who carried no identification. The man claimed his documents had been stolen in Mexico.
Officers queried the man using various law enforcement databases and found that he had an outstanding warrant in Arizona. CBP officers confirmed the warrant, then took Bessent into custody and turned him over to the New Mexico State Police.
