Lady Roadrunners Fall To Payson, 15-2February 29th, 2008
By Greg Perkins With just four days on the practice field and no scrimmage game, all due to the recent wet weather, the Lady Roadrunners of Holbrook weren’t able to work out their preseason jitters before taking the field for their first game of the season on Monday. The result was a 15-2 home loss to Payson. The Lady Longhorns took advantage of Holbrook’s youth and nervousness early on, scoring their 15 runs in the first four innings. Holbrook had just one hit in the game, that coming from Megan Newton-Pender. Kathalena Manygoats got the start in the circle and gave up 10 walks in the first three innings to take the loss. Rietta Wagoner pitched the final two innings, and the Lady Roadrunners showed some spark on defense as they retired the visitors three up and three down in the fifth. “We have a very young team as it is and without having a lot of time on the field we really weren’t able to work out our first game nerves. Now that we have the first one behind us we can focus on the things we need to work on to get better, and the ladies should be a little more relaxed for the next game,” said Coach Monty Flack. After playing at Snowflake on Wednesday, the Lady Birds will host Blue Ridge on Tuesday, March 4. They will get several games at the River Valley Tournament, which begins on Thursday, March 6.
