Birds Face Estrella Foothills Tonight In Opening Round Of State TournamentMay 3rd, 2008
By Greg Perkins The Roadrunners of Holbrook High School open the state baseball tournament with a first round match up against Estrella Foothills at 6 o’clock tonight (May 2) on Field No. 4 at the Surprise Baseball Complex, located at 15850 N. Bullard Ave. in Surprise. Holbrook is one of five teams representing the 3A North Conference, and at least one of those teams is guaranteed to advance to the second round. The Winslow Bulldogs finished as the second team in power points and will host 15th seeded Chinle in an opening round game. Monument Valley made the field of 16 as the 12th seed and will face Fountain Hills today, with the winner meeting up with the winner of the Holbrook-Estrella game. Window Rock is the fifth team from the North in the bracket and as the sixth seeded team will face Empire, which is the 11th team in the bracket. Tonight’s game matches the Roadrunners with the overall winner of the 3A West Conference. The Wolves finished the season with a record of 19-6 and went 10-2 in conference play. They do have several common opponents with the Roadrunners and in comparing results, Estrella holds a bit of an edge. If the Birds can pull the upset, they will face either Fountain Hills or Monument Valley in the second round at 1 p.m. on Saturday on Field No. 5. A loss would bring an end to their season.
