Last season’s Holbrook High School volleyball team made it through the very tough 3A North region schedule and advanced to the state playoffs as the 14th overall seed, then fell to eventual state champion Parker in the first round.
This season the Lady Roadrunners will once again have to play in the North region, which sent five teams to the final field of 16, with two of the final four being Monument Valley and Ganado.
Head Coach Leslie Baldonado looks forward to the challenges ahead this season. “We had a really good summer and we have several returning players with varsity experience, so we feel we can be considered to be one of the top teams in the conference,” she explained.
Players on the varsity roster at this point include Amanda Chee, April Lester, Mallory Martin, Kalei Long, Rietta Wagoner, Sheria Billie, Andrea Yazzie, Chelsea John, Danielle Tapaha and Kainesha Lee.
Playing on the junior varsity team at this time will be Rebecca Valero, Samantha Yazzie, Cherokee Yellowhair, Pilar Duran, Sheriesse Thomas, Janecia Nez, Kellin Bakurza, Bethany Baldwin, Shantina Kinlicheenie, Chelsea Thomas, Tavena Gishal and Aaron Billie.
LaPhena Yazzie, Erin Aragon, Charmayne Freddie, Maria Garcia, Sharon Young and Tamika Baldwin will be seeing their first high school action on the freshmen team.
The varsity team will host Snowflake in a scrimmage contest at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23.  All teams will open the season at Snowflake on Tuesday, Aug. 26, with the freshmen playing at 4:30 p.m., fol-lowed by the junior varsity at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity team will take the court at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Aug. 27, fans will be able to see the first home match of the year when the Lady Birds host Chino Valley at 4, 5 and 6 p.m.
