Lady Birds Fall To Round ValleyMarch 23rd, 2009
By Greg Perkins The Lady Roadrunners are still searching for their first non-tournament win of the softball season after suffering their sixth regular season loss to Round Valley at Eagar on Tuesday afternoon. Brooke Nowell took the loss in the circle for the Lady Birds, who were held to just three hits in the game, two from Cory Gillespie and the other from Megan Newton-Pender. Round Valley started the scoring in the bottom of the first with a three-run blast over the fence, which counted for all the runs the Lady Elks would need. They added one in the second and went on to win the game by a final of 8-0. The Holbrook squad went down on strike outs 13 times in the game and came up with just three hits. The Lady Birds drew some walks, but throughout the game they left six runners stranded. Holbrook’s pitchers gave up just six hits in the game, but most of those came after previous batters were walked, giving the Lady Elks too many unearned runs. The Lady Birds also committed five errors in the loss. After opening the Winslow Invitational Tournament at 6 o’clock Thursday night against Joseph City, the Lady Roadrunners are slated to face Round Valley again at 9 o’clock this morning (March 20), then bounce back to face Ganado at 11 a.m. They will also be in action at the tournament on Saturday. Following the tournament they will be off until Tuesday, March 31, when they travel to Snowflake to meet the Lady Lobos. Their next home game will be on Thursday, April 2, against St. Johns, followed by the North regional opener at home, a doubleheader against Monument Valley on Saturday, April 4.
