Wrestler Markos Serna Takes Second In Phoenix NationalsMarch 25th, 2009
When you think of Holbrook wrestling over the past decade you think of the name Serna. Nick, Richard and Markos Serna have been contributing factors to the success of the Holbrook wrestling program. Together they have won several titles and numerous honors, including team MVPs, out-standing wrestlers, tournament champions, regional champions, state champions, all-state and all-Americans. Markos, the youngest brother, has completed his senior year, and is looking to continue his wrestling career. He finished his senior year with a 139-12 record, including 109 pins, and was a two-time state champion, three-time regional champion, four-time team MVP, all-state and an All-American. He recently took second at the national tournament in Phoenix. The next challenge for Markos is nationals in Virginia Beach, Va. This is the top tournament in the country. Only the best of the best will be wrestling at this event, which will be attended by college scouts. Markos will be representing the Holbrook community at this national event and in college over the years. Virginia Beach nationals is a very prestigious event and is also expensive. This is a week long event and there are several costs, including airplane tickets, rental car, hotel, food and tournament entry. The total cost will be around $2,000. He is leaving March 30. To help fund the trip, there will be a Navajo taco sale on Thursday, March 26, at 1006 Hermosa in Hol-brook, and a carwash on Saturday, March 28.
