Lady Bulldogs Take Pair From Monument Valley

    The Winslow Lady Bulldogs won a doubleheader from the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs last Monday at Kayenta, 16-1 and 17-1. The wins left them undefeated in 3A North Region play and with a magnificent 18-3 record for the season.
    The first game went six innings, with Jennifer Yazzie working the first four and getting the win while allowing one hit and three walks and fanning three. Mallory Smith worked the other two innings, allowing an unearned run on one hit while striking out four and walking one.
    After two scoreless innings, Winslow took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third on a single by Mireya Ulibarri, a double by Felicia Nagle, an error and a single by Gabrielle Stacey. The lead grew to 6-0 in the fourth on singles by Ulibarri, Arianna Huerta and Nagle, and a triple by Yazzie. The lead increased to 8-0 in the fifth on singles by Kyli Parsons, Ulibarri and Huerta. An eight-run sixth put the game out of sight at 16-0. Yazzie had two home runs in the inning, and Melissa Jacobs and Bernice Gover had singles. The Lady Mustangs scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth on an error, a walk and a single.
    Ulibarri and Huerta were three for four at the plate. Yazzie was three for five with two home runs and a triple. Nagle was two for three with a double. Parsons and Jacobs were each one for three. Gover was one for four.
    In the second game, Kelly Pugh went the full five innings on the mound, and allowed an unearned run on four hits and a walk while fanning six.
    Winslow scored six runs in the top of the first inning on an error, a hit batsman, two walks, and singles by Yazzie, Jacobs and Smith. The margin was doubled to 12-0 in the second on two errors, a walk, a triple by Yazzie, and singles by Gover, Jacobs and Smith. Four more runs scored in the top of the fourth on a walk, two errors, and singles by Robina Villanueva, Stacey and Smith to make the lead 16-0. Monument Valley scored in the bottom of the fourth on an error and a double. Winslow’s final run came in the top of the fifth on a single by Smith and an error.
    Smith was four for four at the plate. Jacobs was two for four. Gover and Villanueva were each one for two. Yazzie and Ulibarri were each one for three. Nagle was one for five with a double.
