Bulldogs Go 12-9 In Summer Basketball

   The Winslow High School boys’ basketball team completed its summer activity with a 2-4 showing in a tournament played in San Diego, Calif. The team finished its summer activity with 12 wins and nine losses.
   Coach Ricky Greer and Paul Landis agreed that the summer had been productive as the team gained valuable experience. The team met some very tough competition and played in some exciting games that provided good learning experiences. Greer said that the players who came into the summer with no varsity experience got a good taste of action at that level and showed the likelihood of helping the team in the coming season.
   New players seeing their first experience at the higher level included Sedale Flanagan, Tyler Williams and Carlyle Begay.
   At San Diego, the team started with a pair of losses.
   The first setback was to Chaparral of Southern California, a team with a player ranked as one of the top sophomore prospects in the country. Winslow did not play very good defense, according to Greer, and lost by 10 points. The second loss was to Thunderbird High of Phoenix, and defense was again cited as a problem as Thunderbird won by four points.
   Winslow won its next two games against less talented competition, beating Clayton, N.M., by 11 points and Arrowhead Christian of Redlands, Calif., by 25 points.
   The team lost its third game of that day by four points to Reedley, Calif. Winslow was without starting point guard Kraig Shirley in that contest due to a sprained ankle.
   The final game was a loss to Bishop, Calif., the next morning by eight points. Winslow was again hampered by Shirley’s injury and an ankle problem by Sean Pugh that left him far from 100 percent. Tyler Williams also had his ankle injured during the contest.
   Greer indicated that he feels the team will be better prepared for the coming season due to the tough competition faced in the summer and the chance for players to blend into a team.
