HHS Cross Country Teams Open Season At Hopi MeetSeptember 9th, 2009
By Greg Perkins Holbrook’s cross country teams finally got the season under way last week when they competed at the Hopi Invitational. Coach Tim Yazzie has 16 boys and 10 girls on the roster. Running in the boys’ races throughout the season will be Clint Alex, Wimberly Nodestine, Gjermundson Jake, Jackie Frank, Adrian Thomas, Cody Yellowhair, Melcomh Chee, Olin Roan, Miles Begay, Corey Kanuho, Michael Kinlicheenie, Maurice Joe, Phillip Curtis, Chris Chester and Jimrail Manygoats. Competing in the girls’ races will be Courtney Alex, Andrell Williams, Vanessa Bahe, Shaunacy Little, Tamisha Yazzie, Jessica Yazzie, Colbi Nez, Robin James, and Kelsey Yazzie. Anthony Marietta and Luwanna Begay are the team managers. Chinle won the girls’ meet at Hopi with a team score of 38. Page placed second with 91 and Tuba City was third. There were 11 teams in the meet. Holbrook had six girls compete, four in the varsity race and two in the junior varsity run. Tamisha Yazzie was the highest Holbrook finisher in the varsity race, placing 29th with a time of 24.05. Colbi Nez was 33rd, Kelsey Yazzie, 64th, and Andrell Williams, 75th. In the jayvee race, Jessica Yazzie placed 60th and Shaunacy Little was 67th. The ladies did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score. In the boys’ meet, 14 teams competed, Hopi winning the title with 55 points. Page was second with 67 and Tuba City placed third with 101. Holbrook placed eighth with 250 points. Adrian Thomas paced the Birds, placing 25th with a time of 18.49. Jackie Frank was 43rd, Corey Kanuho, 44th, Melcomh Chee, 63rd, and Maurice Joe, 75th. In the junior varsity race, Michael Kinlicheenie earned a medal for placing sixth overall with a time of 20.27. Jimrail Manygoats was 20th, Cody Yellowhair, 39th, Miles Begay, 59th, and Phillip Curtis, 61st. The teams will compete in the Winslow four-way meet today (Sept. 9). On Saturday, Sept. 12, they will run in the Chinle Invitational.
