The Ganado junior varsity football team defeated the Winslow jayvees 28-16 in a game played in Winslow last Thursday.
The young Bulldogs took an 8-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 45-yard pass from Tyson Yazzie to Ty Williams followed by a two-point conversion pass by the same players.
Ganado tied the score with 5:11 left in the quarter on a 23-yard run by Colin Smith and a conversion run by Quilen Blueeyes. The quarter ended with the score tied at 8-8.
Winslow’s defense stopped a Ganado drive at the one yard line in the second period, but Tyron Jones scored on a five-yard run for the young Hornets with 3:13 left in the half. The conversion failed and Ganado led 14-8.
Winslow took the lead at 16-14 with just half a minute left until intermission. The touchdown came on an exciting 77-yard pass and run from Yazzie to Jude Oso, who avoided a host of would be tacklers on the long scoring scamper. Yazzie then passed to Chris Garrett for the two-point conversion and a 16-14 halftime advantage.
Jones scored his second touchdown of the game for the Hornets on a three-yard run with 8:10 left in the third quarter. The conversion run failed and Ganado led 20-16.
The teams battled evenly for most of the rest of the game, but Jones scored for the third time in the contest with just 4:22 left on the clock. Blueeyes ran for the two-point conversion and the 28-16 final was on the boards.
The loss dropped Winslow’s junior varsity to 1-3 for the season. The team will play at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Chinle.
