Holbrook Harriers Win Snowflake InvitationalSeptember 30th, 2009
By Greg Perkins The Holbrook boys’ cross country team took first place at the Snowflake Invitational meet held Sept. 23 with 45 points. Valley Sanders was second with 60, followed by Greyhills with 104, Snowflake, 106, Payson, 114, Show Low, 130, and Alchesay, 158. Holbrook also won the individual title, as Adrian Thomas crossed the line in first place with a time of 17:20. Melcomh Chee was eighth in 18:46; Corey Kanuho, 10th in 18:57; Marvin Yazzie, 11th in 19:01; Jackie Frank, 15th in 19:23; Jimrail Manygoats, 25th in 19:44; and Clint Alex, 30th in 20:22. In the larger Shane C. Morris Invitational meet held Sept. 26 at Woodland Lake Park in Pinetop, the Roadrunners placed fourth in an 11-team field. Sedona won the team title with 52 points, followed by Zuni with 73, Blue Ridge, 76, and Holbrook, 85. Jesus Rivera of Sedona won the event with a time of 16:39. Competing with 67 runners, Adrian Thomas paced Holbrook’s squad in 14th place with a time of 18:55. Jackie Frank was 15th in 18:55.5; Corey Kanuho, 16th in 19:07; Melcomh Chee, 17th in 19:14; Marvin Yazzie, 23rd in 19:31; and Jimrail Manygoats, 35th in 20:24. In the junior varsity boys’ race, Maurice Joe placed ninth with a time of 22:10; Phillip Curtis, 19th in 24:07; and Miles Begay, 21st in 24:12. Thirty-eight runners competed. Just two Holbrook girls competed in the varsity race. Kelsi Yazzie placed 40th with a time of 26:01 and Andrell Williams was 50th in 27:47. Blue Ridge’s Allison Rydberg won the 54-runner event with a time of 20:45. The Lady Roadrunners also had two runners in the junior varsity race. Jessica Yazzie placed 15th with a time of 28:39 and Mariah Thomas was 22nd in 30:19. On Friday, Oct. 2, the teams will compete at the Dave Conaster Invitational meet in Winslow. The following Friday, they will run at the Alchesay Invitational in Whiteriver.
