Roadrunners Earn 7-0 Shutout Over St. JohnsOctober 7th, 2009
By Greg Perkins The Roadrunners of Holbrook evened their conference soccer record at 2-2 with a 7-0 shutout over St. Johns. Playing at home on Wednesday of Homecoming Week, the Birds took the lead on a header by RJ Alvarado over the Redskin goal keeper’s head. Mark Saxton earned his second assist of the season on a punt from the goalie box. Jesus Aguilera took a crossing pass from Joey Aguilera and found the net for the Roadrunners’ second goal of the match. Joey Aguilera then scored on his own ripping a shot into the goal with three minutes left, giving Holbrook a 3-0 halftime cushion. In the second half the Aguileras combined for yet another goal. Jesus took a nice crossing pass from Joey and headed it into the goal. Alvarado and Joey Aguilera both added their second goals of the match in the second half. The final goal came from a penalty kick. Robert Jaquez booted the ball past the keeper, ending the scoring with the Birds on top 7-0. Saxton earned his third shutout of the season, turning back 11 shot attempts by St. Johns. “Our defense of Kory Koerperich, Joe McCarthy, Riley McClellan, Javier Quintana, Shale Silversmith and Micah Gorman deserves some credit for not allowing St. Johns to score,” said Coach Dave Wright. In the match Holbrook attempted 13 shots on goal, converting on seven. Joey and Jesus Aguilera each had four, Alvarado took three and Andy Leon had two shot attempts. The Roadrunners will travel to Snowflake for a critical conference match today (Oct. 7). On Saturday, Oct. 10, they will host Round Valley in their final match prior to the fall break.
