Lady Roadrunners Fall To Monument Valley

    Facing one of the top teams in the state this year and the defending champion from last year, the Lady Roadrunners dropped both matches of a doubleheader contest against Monument Valley played in Holbrook last Saturday.  
    The Lady Mustangs won the first match in three straight games, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-14.
    Sheria Billie finished the match with five kills, a dig and an assist. Amanda Chee had three kills, 12 digs, 15 assists and a block. Chelsea John had four kills, a dig, four assists and a block, April Lester had six kills, four blocks and an ace. Kalei Long had a kill and four digs. Mallory Martin had four kills, eight digs, an assist and a block. Danielle Tapaha had eight digs. Rietta Wagoner had nine kills, seven digs, an assist and a block. Sam Yazzie had four digs, 16 assists and served one ace.
    After the freshman and junior varsity teams played, the two varsity squads took to the court again, and in the first game, Holbrook seemed to have the answer to taking down the Lady Mustangs. The Lady Roadrunners won the first game of the match 25-19, but dropped the second, 25-20, and the third, 25-15. In the fourth and final game the Lady Mustangs put the hammer down, beating Holbrook 25-8 to clinch the doubleheader sweep.
    Billie recorded five kills, 16 digs and an assist.  Chee had 12 digs, 18 assists and a block. John had three kills, a dig, two assists and two blocks. Lester had 12 kills, six digs and a block. Martin had five kills, 10 digs and an ace. Tapaha had one dig. Wagoner had six kills, seven digs, an assist and three blocks. Yazzie had a kill, four digs and nine assists.
    The two losses were the first region losses of the year for the Lady Roadrunners.  
    After playing at Chinle on Thursday, the Lady Birds will play at Tuba City on Saturday, Oct. 10, then host Chinle on Monday, Oct. 12. Following that match they will have eight days off before resuming play at home against Winslow on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
