Two Holbrook Runners Earn State Cross Country MedalsNovember 11th, 2009
By Greg Perkins Two Holbrook runners earned medals at the 3A State Cross Country Meet held last Saturday in Cave Creek. Adrian Thomas placed 16th in the boys’ race and Col-Bi Nez placed 26th in the girls’ race, garnering medals for their top 28 finish in the final race of the season. The Holbrook boys’ team placed seventh among 17 teams with 197 team points. Tuba City won the event with 42 points. Chinle had 55, Ganado, 123, Sedona, 125 and Blue Ridge, 136. Billy Orman of Tuba City took the top individual honor with a time of 15:47. Sedona’s Jesus Rivera was second in 16:15 and Ryan Yazzie of Tuba City placed third in 16:54. Holbrook was paced by Adrian Thomas with a time of 17:42. Corey Kanuho placed 35th in 18:32, Melcomh Chee was 43rd in 18:53, Jackie Frank was 49th in 19:01 and Clint Alex was 70th in 19:56. A total of 125 runners competed in the event. Chinle won the girls’ team title with 34 points. Sedona placed second with 85, followed by Tuba City with 96, Winslow, 119, and Window Rock, 177. Rolanda Jumbo of Chinle won the individual title with a time of 18:40 in the 119-runner field. Charnelle Curley, also of Chinle, was second in 19:55 and April Tracy of Tuba City placed third in 20:33. Col-Bi Nez’s time of 21:57 led Holbrook’s three runners in the race. Tamisha Yazzie placed 63rd in 24:25 and Kelsi Yazzie placed 97th in 26:44.

Adrian Thomas finished 17th at the 3A state boys’ cross country meet and Col’Bi Nez finished 26th in the state girls’ meet to bring back medals to Holbrook High School.
