WHS Teams Open Basketball Season

   The Winslow High School Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs were to begin their seasons last Friday with controlled scrimmages against the Sinagua High School teams, but there was a misunderstanding as to where the scrimmages were to be held and the Sinagua teams did not come to Winslow. The Winslow teams held practice scrimmages instead.
   Both teams began regular season play on Tuesday against the Payson Longhorns and Lady Longhorns. Both will host Snowflake High School teams on Tuesday, Dec. 1. All of these games are non-regional affairs.
   On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, both teams are in tournaments. The Lady Bulldogs will be in Gallup for the very tough Gallup Invitational Tournament. The Bulldogs will be hosting the Cake Chevrolet Shootout Tournament on those days.
   The Lady Bulldogs will be at Show Low on Wednesday, Dec. 9, to meet the Lady Cougars. The boys will be off that day, but will be at Flagstaff for the Pepsi Invitational Tournament Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 10-12. The girls will not play on that weekend.
   Both teams will host the Hopi Bruins and Lady Bruins on Monday, Dec. 14. The Bulldogs will face the Chinle Wildcats on Tuesday, Dec. 15, in a 3A North Region contest. The Lady Bulldogs will not play that day, but will host the Winslow Winter Classic on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 17, 18 and 19.
   Both teams will begin the 2010 portion of their seasons on Tuesday, Jan. 5, when they meet Greyhills Academy teams at Tuba City in non-regional games.
   The Winslow Bulldogs are coached by Ricky Greer, with Paul Landis assisting. Returning players include Micheaux Begaii, Dale Dixon, Jevon Estelle, Jared Jake, Sam Miller, Sean Pugh, Kraig Shirley, Lakota Shirley, Jermayne Williams and Jaken Yazzie. New to the team this year are Carlyle Begay, Sedale Flanagan, Holden Nalwood, Mark Oliva, Tyler Williams and Johnny Woods.
   The Lady Bulldogs are coached by Don Petranovich, who is assisted by Karen Williams, Jerron Jordan and Julie Thomas. Returning players include Gabby Stacey, Kourtney Shirley, Shernise Ward, Paige Shirley, Felencia Keams, Melissa Jacobs and Jennifer Yazzie. New to the team are Corey Nez, Casey Gorman, Mattea Begaii and Tee Wanna Morris.
   Home games are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. for the boys’ and girls’ junior varsities, 6 p.m. for the boys’ freshman and the girls’ varsity and 7:30 p.m. for the girls’ freshman and the boys’ varsity. Both freshman games and the girls’ junior varsity games will be played at the old Bulldog gym. Both varsity games and the boys’ junior varsity games will be played at Don Petranovich Gymnasium.
