Lady Lobos Fall To Holbrook, 55-47December 2nd, 2009
By Greg Perkins The Lady Lobos of Snowflake opened the season with a hard fought, 55-47 road loss at Holbrook on Tuesday prior to the Thanksgiving break. Snowflake played well behind six first period points from Reagon Godfrey, which helped her team hold a four-point lead heading to the second period. In the second, Alex Merrell and Natalie Elkins were able to score from close range, with each player netting four points as the Lady Lobos increased their margin to 31-22 at the half. In the third, the Lady Roadrunners trimmed four points off the lead, primarily by getting the ball to their inside players. Snowflake struggled from the field in the third, scoring just four baskets spread among four different players. In the fourth, Holbrook was finally able to overcome the Lady Lobos, taking a 43-41 lead midway through the period. Down the stretch both teams played hard, but the Lady Roadrunners made enough steals and converted enough free throws to seal the 55-47 win. Brittany Titus lead Snowflake with 10 points, followed by Reagon Godfrey and Taylor Brubaker with 8 each, Alex Merrell and Natalie Elkins, 6 each, Jessica Johnson, 4, Lisha Titus, 3, and Devrie Woodside, 2. The Lady Lobos hit 22 field goals, none from three-point land, and converted three of eight free throw attempts. Holbrook made 19 field goals, three from behind the arc, and converted 14 of 21 free throw attempts. Snowflake 14 17 8 8 47 Holbrook 10 12 12 21 55 Coach Don Godfrey has 13 girls on the Lady Lobo varsity roster, including seniors Taylor Brubaker, Brittany Titus, Jessica Johnson, Debbie Nezzie and Shelby Sherwood, juniors Reagon Godfrey, Alex Merrell, Kiana Natvidad and Courtney Reidhead, and sophomores Natalie Elkins, Carlie Stratton, Devrie Woodside and Lisha Titus. Last season the Lady Lobos were 12-14 overall, but finished in third place in the East region with a 6-4 record. They closed their season in the first round of the state tournament with a loss to eventual state runner-up Winslow. “This year we have three big post players, who we will need to count on. Also our guards will have to do a good job of taking care of the ball and finding our post players when they are open,” stated Coach Godfrey. After facing a difficult Lady Bulldog team at Winslow on Tuesday, the Lady Lobos will play their first home game of the season when they host St. Johns on Friday night, Dec. 4. Following that game they will have nearly a week off to prepare for play in the Round Valley Invitational tournament, which begins on Thursday, Dec. 10, in Eagar.
