Holbrook Wrestlers Compete In Show Low Multiple MeetDecember 23rd, 2009
By Greg Perkins Holbrook’s wrestlers were in Show Low Dec. 16 for a five-way multiple meet along with the hosting Cougars, Red Mesa, St. Johns and Round Valley. Holbrook has a young squad this year, with several wrestlers competing on the varsity level for the first year. They came away from the multiple with one win and four losses. Holbrook defeated Red Mesa, 48-27, then lost to St. Johns, 42-30, Show Low, 51-24, and Round Valley, 50-18. “We are really young right now and are gaining experience with each match. Only one wrestler from the 103 to the 145-pound divisions has had any varsity experience before this year,” said Coach John Bokker. “I was proud of the way our young guys fought. The veteran guys got the job done for us. Once we get healthy and gain some experience, we will be on track for regionals and state.” In the four matches Riley McClellan went 1-3 at 112, Michael McMonigal was 0-4 in the 119 class, Mathew Cano went 0-1 at 125, RJ Alvarado was 2-1 at 125, Shawn Gillespie was 1-3 at 130, Robert Dawson was 0-4 at 135, Chris Gonzales was 0-4 at 140, Josh Hatch was 4-0 at 152, AJ Aragon was 3-1 at 171, Scott Tafoya was 4-0 at 189, Shelton Thomas was 3-1 at 215 and heavyweight Royce Reynolds went 2-2. Reuben Kee went 0-1 in his only junior varsity match.
