Winslow High School Athletic Director and girls’ basketball coach Don Petranovich has coached more winning games than any coach in state history, and is a member of the Arizona Coaches Hall of Fame and the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame. He has received a multitude of state and national honors as both a girls’ basketball coach and athletic director during his lengthy career in those capacities at WHS, and he recently added one more to the list.
Petranovich has been selected as a National Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High School Associations Coaches Association. He is one of 21 high school coaches so honored. The association has honored coaches through an awards program since 1982. It honors coaches in the top 10 girls’ and boys’ sports, and in one other category that is not included in those 20 sports. Winners of the awards must be active coaches in the year for which they receive the award. The awards being given this year are for the 2008-9 school year. Petranovich received his honor as girls’ basketball coach.
