Hosting Winslow in a dual match last Wednesday, Holbrook’s Roadrunners came away with an exciting 36-35 win over the Bulldogs.
Holbrook won four matches compared to six by the Bulldogs, but the Roadrunners were able to fill three weight classes that Winslow couldn’t, so they received three forfeits, helping them get the important region win.
In the 103 class, Kyle Lester from Holbrook was pinned by Craig Boyd from Winslow. Shawn Gillespie from Holbrook was also pinned in the 119 class by Winslow’s Paul Jaramillo. RJ Alvarado and Drew Shumway of Holbrook received forfeit wins in the 125 and 130 weight classes. Aaron Baca from Winslow defeated Holbrook’s Gjermundson Jake in the 135 class by pin. Sam Glasses lost to Winslow’s Emmit Foster in the 140 division.
David Hatch won 7-5 over Winslow’s Josh Vargas in the 145 class.  His brother, Josh Hatch, pinned Winslow’s Isaac Aragon in the 152 division.  Holbrook’s AJ Aragon defeated Winslow’s Nathan Tafoya in a close match by a 6-3 final. Scott Tafoya pinned Mark Hawley from Winslow in the 171 class.
Reuben Kee lost to Colton Davis from Winslow in the 189 division. Shelton Thomas lost to Winslow’s Zach Young in the 215 class, and Holbrook's heavyweight, Raymond Yazzie, received a forfeit.
“Competition with Winslow is always exciting. It was nice to see David Hatch wrestle again after being out since the second week of the season with a knee injury,” said Coach John Bokker. “This was an important win for us for regional seating. We still have a couple wrestlers getting over sickness. They should be at full strength by regionals.”
The North Regional Meet will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6, in Ganado.
