Sarah Henling

Holy Rosary for Sarah Koury Henling, 97, who died on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, in Winslow, was to be recited at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Winslow, lead by Father Frank Chacon. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 o’clock this morning (March 5) at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Holbrook, with Father Bob Mathieu as celebrant. Interment will follow at Holbrook City Cemetery.
    Sarah was born on Sept. 20, 1910, in New Mexico to T.J. and Florence Amin Koury.
    They moved their young family to Holbrook when Sarah was a pre-schooler. They operated Koury Mercantile from 1914 to 1970.
    Sarah graduated from Holbrook High School and was her class valedictorian.
    She worked as a cashier and then as vice president of the First National Bank of Holbrook until her marriage to John Henling Sr. on Dec. 24, 1943.
    She was a devoted mother, grandmother and housewife.
    Survivors include her two sons, Jim (Janice) and John (Anita) of Winslow; four grandchildren, Ray (Kasey) of Austin, Texas, Steve (Kim) of Winslow, Elise (Denis) of Glendale and Jeremy of Winslow; three great-grandchildren; her youngest sister, Josephine Alley of Holbrook; and her youngest brother, Robert Koury of Holbrook.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Sr.; an infant daughter, Barbara Ann; a teenage son, Richard; four brothers, Joe, John, George and Eddie; and five sisters, Rose, Lena, Letife, Lily and Mary.
    Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow is in charge of the arrangements.
