Sam Evelyn Lee

Sam Evelyn “Sammie” Lee, 90, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at her home in Holbrook.  A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, at the American Legion Hall, 219 E. Iowa in Holbrook.
    She was born March 16, 1918, in Princeton, Ark., to Sam and Nancy (Cheatum) Turner, and she was the oldest of seven children.
    Sammie had a great love for the Hopi Tribe; doing a tremendous amount of genealogy for them, she was instrumental in helping preserve the Hopi culture for future generations to come. She was a school-teacher who loved to make handmade quilts.
    Sammie worked at the Trading Post in Keams Canyon with many of her friends. During her time while serving her country in the United States Navy, she worked in the Fleet Post Office in Hawaii after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, serving as the Port Mistress.
    Survivors include one son, Richard Henry Lee; two stepsons, Kenneth Ray Lee and Jack Randolph Lee; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    The family has requested that donations be made in honor of Sam Evelyn “Sammie” Lee to RTA Hos-pice and Palliative Care, 1789 W. Commerce Drive, Lakeside, Ariz. 85929.
    Owens Livingston Mortuary of Holbrook is in charge of the arrangements.
